Welcome back to the farm — today marks the official start of potato harvest, and we’re taking you along for the entire journey: from the field all the way into the cellar.

We start with the windrower, which digs up six rows of potatoes and lays them on top of four more rows. Right behind it, the harvester picks up 10 rows at a time using a system of primary belts, secondary belts, and a divider. These belts separate vines, dirt, and rocks while keeping the potatoes as bruise-free as possible.

From there, we hop up on the harvester and take a closer look at how the belts work, how rocks are separated on the star table, and how the boom fills each truck with precision using a joystick. It’s a high-stress, high-skill job — especially in a rocky field.

Once the trucks are loaded, they head back to the cellar. We unload into the even-flow bin, through shakers and star tables, where vines, rocks, dirt, and undersized potatoes are separated. The clean potatoes move across the sizer, where small “eliminators” get diverted into separate trucks. Those eliminators will be piled in a different cellar.

Finally, we show how the good potatoes are piled for storage, using soft conveyors and controlled piling methods to avoid bruising. By the end of harvest, we’ll have six cellars filled with 500,000 sacks — that’s 50 million pounds of potatoes — ready to be shipped fresh all winter long to grocery stores like Costco and many others across the country.
