Day two of potato harvest turned into a full-blown adventure on the farm! 🥔🚜
We started the morning with some repairs on the harvester — one of the main bearings went out, so we had to torch off a big sprocket, replace bearings, and get everything put back together before we could even think about digging. Once we finally got rolling, Christopher jumped in the harvester to open up a new section while Dad ran the crossover, counting rows the old-school way.
Meanwhile, juggling between loading trucks, managing the boom, and filming. Later in the day, I hopped in the tractor and started chisel plowing — we’ve got 2,500 acres to get worked before the ground freezes, so every hour counts. While plowing, I came across a massive chunk of metal buried in the field… looked like a blade off a loader bucket
As temperatures climbed, the potatoes started getting too warm to dig — once they hit 63°F internally, we have to stop to keep them from breaking down in storage. So we shut down mid-afternoon and planned to dig again from 8 to midnight. I turned on some pivots, checked a few fields, and then headed to the cellar where I found some absolute monster potatoes. These spuds will be boxed and shipped to grocery stores and restaurants all over the country in just a few months.
And because it wouldn’t be potato harvest without some drama, we even had a truck get stuck in soft dirt. Pulled it out with the 8330 and a 75,000 lb kinetic yanking rope — worked like a charm 💪
