The Craft of Malting Barley in Montana! | Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion

This week we visit Farm Power Malt owned and operated by Ryan Pfeifle. Ryan started with a passion for homebrewing while working as an engineer. He learned a lot about the craft of brewing while living in Scotland for a while. When he returned to Montana, Ryan was not able to use barley that his family grows for his homebrewing adventures. That's when Ryan built a small drum for malting his own farm's barley and then a bigger one, which you will see in the video because he enjoyed it so much. It is very fascinating that in order to make beer or many other malt products (malt syrup, malt vinegar, Whoppers, and malted milk) it requires a long technical process. In this video, we are covering the first step. After the barley grain malt is created Ryan ships it to local breweries and even homebrewers. Ryan is a craft malter and his malt plays a huge part in making local commercial craft beer. Ryan and I explain the difference between wheat and barley and why barley malts better than wheat. The husk is still on barley after it's harvested but is not on wheat. The husk on barley acts as a natural filter in the malting process. In this video, you will see Ryan's custom-engineered malting drum. A drum is what is used to keep the barley mixed and aerated to provide an equal distribution of oxygen and temperature for successful germination. It also helps to evenly dry down the sprouted barley grain. Ryan built this malting drum himself. It is amazing! The process of malting barley is very interesting. Getting the sugar out of the barley grain is the key to a great malt. There are many distinctive flavors of malt depending on how you do it. I hope you learn more about malting and how barley that is grown on our farm is used. Enjoy the video! Don't forget to like and subscribe and tell your friends!! Thank you so much and remember to shop local.

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years
