$5 Livestock Water Source

11.27am - Wednesday 6th January 2016 26,203

It's a piece of plywood in a stream with a hole drilled in it and a metal screen covering it. Plain and simple. This works for people who have a water source like Troy does on their farm. It will not be a solution for all of you, but it's a great example of taking advantage of the resources on hand.

The stream is fed by a natural spring higher up on the hill. As we say in the video, Troy has been using this system for years. It is gravity fed so there's no need to add pressure. The water just flows downhill to the cattle and gets stored in tubs.

The constantly running water helps keep the tubs from freezing in the winter which is great for the cows. The overflow water runs back toward the stream area getting filtered naturally as it goes.

Troy works for a Conservation District so he knows what he's doing when it comes to mixing livestock and water. If you're unsure I recommend finding a professional in your area to give you advice.
