The take-away here is to keep your coop and your chicken's nesting boxes as clean as you can. You don't want to have to spend any time washing eggs. There's no value added there, and you could argue there's value taken away from handling the egg. If you keep the nesting boxes clean then your eggs should stay cleaner and you have to do less work.
I use hay in my nesting boxes and I keep spare hay on hand for when the chickens make it dirty. It's so worth it!
If you have to clean your eggs, which even I have to clean mine at times, then using running water, soap without any dyes or perfumes, and a clean cloth or towel is the way to go. If you're at a small scale you don't need a fancy egg-washer, you just have to keep your nesting boxes clean and take care with the eggs that end up with poop on them.
