I mean... hand weeding a small garden bed can be relaxing and cathartic, hand weeding an acre of hops is tedious and difficult. Because of my management missteps in the past we are playing catch-up on the farm this year. Giving the hops the love they deserve and hopefully setting ourselves up for success in the future.

Hops are a lot of work and I have learned a ton of information on what to do and even more on what not to do. I have never properly addressed the weeds in the past and the plants are suffering for it.

Through some motivational speeches, promises of beer to come, and a little pleading I got some friends to pitch in and help me weed the hop yard by hand to give the hops a head start for the year. The weeds should be easier to manage after the hops are grown, but they need to grow first.

There were smaller hop plants that were suffering from being choked out by weeds and we have saved them. Now with more resources like sun and water they are thriving and starting to really grow.

While it was a hard decision to make and a harder task to accomplish, we did it! I am excited to see what the yard does this year with all the care we've given it so far.
