Do farmers take a day off? (Farm Sales Day 39)

1.00am - Monday 21st April 2014 1,575

Happy Easter everyone! Whether you celebrate or not there is always a good excuse to spend time with family and get off the farm. Days like these are the most important for anyone at any job, but especially for farmers.

The "to do" list never gets smaller. When you think you're getting near the end, it's because there's something you haven't thought of yet, haha.

I know that by the end of this week I was burnt out. I had nothing left in the tanks. Kate was cutting my hair so I would look nice for Easter and I fell asleep in the middle of it sitting up.

Having now had a day off the farm to fill myself iwth delicious food, spend time with my amazing family, and hold my daughter I feel relaxed and energized again. I will go into tomorrow with my spirits high and more energy because of time off for some perspective and relaxation. That insanity will still be there tomorrow, but now I won't be bone weary.

As farmers it is often quite easy to have to think we NEED to work seven days a week, 16 hours a day. The old salts who tell you they do that 365 are lieing to you. Yeah, we work a lot. But if you can train someone in that can come on occasion you can find relief in even a few hours off the farm.

I still had a few short tasks that I did on farm today, it wasn't completely off. But I kept it to under an hour of work and the rest of the day hanging out. I even got to sleep in until the late hour of 6:26 am! That's a lot later than 5am.

I have a bi-weekly podcast about the business of farming where I share my story and interviews from farmers from around the country at http://growingfarmspodcast.com
