Thatch is the layer of dead grass sitting on top of you pasture or lawn from previous years growth. Getting rid of it opens up the ground, allows air and sunlight to get to the ground, and allows for new growth to come up quicker.
I did an experiment with chickens last fall that I'm seeing the results of now. I left them in the rotations a little longer that I would normally and had them really do a number on the thatch to break through it more than they have in the past.
It worked!!! The grass that's coming up now is great and growing faster than the thatched areas near it. I'm constantly working on my holistic management. How everything works together and what effect my decisions have on my piece of land.
I'm no expert for sure. But, I'm trying year to year to get a little better and work on regenerating my land instead of just sustaining.
