Thinking Through Equipment Purchases

11.17am - Wednesday 10th February 2016 2,511

There's a lesson in everything you do on farm. I can't stop thinking about this rake because it represents something more for my farm. I could have tried fixing this old rake or fashioning a new handle out of one of my now dead apples trees, but I didn't.

While there's certainly value in repairing the old to keep it working, sometimes there's more value in recognizing when something's just not going to do the job any more, then finding/making/buying something new. Trust me, I don't run out and spend money every time something breaks. I have my fair share of farm-fixes around here. "Bubble gum and duct tape."

However, at some point with some things it's just time to get rid of and/or replace. That's part of why I got rid of a few operations on farm this year like sheep, eggs, and vegetables. Those things can work on their own, but in my situation on my farm it was time to scrap them and start over.

I'm approaching 2016 with a focused and thought out plan. I'm working to clear any of the (both literal and figurative) cobwebs, piles of junk, and anchors weighing me down. I've been doing a lot of research into manufacturing systems and that is having a positive effect on my farm choices this year.

It is hard to encompass all of that in a video about a rake, but if you subscribe we'll work on it together this year.

Cheers!
