Pigs Replant Hop Yard

7.12pm - Friday 13th May 2016 11,247

Feed your soil to feed your pigs. Pigs want to root and dig and find all the things living under the surface of the soil and eat them. It's fun to watch.

For me I had some rows in my hop yard that would have been hard to reach with a tiller so I sent in the specialists. I want to not only get rid of all the weeds and grass that has grown in the rows but I want to get rid of the old plants as well. The pigs seem to prefer the old hop rhizomes but they're not that picky and they eat just about everything.

I will rotate them in the hop yard most of the season making two passes over some areas to really work the soil. Then this fall, hopefully, we will replant the two varieties and have a cleaner, more organized, more productive area of the hop yard.

Stay tuned throughout the season to follow along with my crazy busy little farm.

Cheers!
