Our Combine CAUGHT ON FIRE??

11.00pm - Monday 23rd September 2019 166,057

Cornstar Farms has been a popping place. We wanted to continue our progress on putting a new auger on top of the 50,000 bushel bin but the rain confined us to the main heated shop. It was no issue at all as we have 100 projects left to complete in the shop before harvest starts.

I almost ran out of gas on the way to the main heated shop, but luckily I made it. The first project I got to work on for the day was straighten out a snoot on the Case IH 2208 corn head. Last fall, Daddy Cornstar got a little bit rambunctious with the combine (actually, I think it was me) and a snoot ended up getting bent. Cooper, the mastermind behind fixing most issues we have on the farm, helped me fix the snoot and we got it back into place issue free.

While we were working on that, Daddy Cornstar was pulling a wheel off the 2008 Chrysler 300 to take care of something that was squeaking. Once the wheel was taken care of, things went crazy in the shop and every project started getting worked on. Dad put new wheel bearings back in the older Brent 674 Grain Cart, and Cooper and I basically got the corn head wrapped up, despite one little issue.

Luckily, we only had one headache with the corn head. We had a row that was not timed correctly. We were having issues getting the snapping rollers off but as everyone knows, a Cornstar is not afraid of putting in hard work. We decided to put the corn head on hold until the next morning and opted for putting the duals back on the 1991 Case IH 7140. Cooper used the 2005 Bobcat T-190 to haul the duals in. We are not professional when it comes to putting on duals, as it took us quite a bit of time. After that, I highlight a few things we are doing, and need to do. While I am walking around talking, Cooper is busy working on the Massey Ferguson 2745. He installed a new fuel primer and put two new fuel filters on.

The next morning, Cooper went to town pulling semi tires off while I worked on getting the snapping rollers off the corn head. I was getting a little fed up with the corn head so I decided to grease the bottom side of the 2001 Case IH 2388 combine.

We ended up resorting to stealing our neighbors even larger gear puller. Our neighbor, a good mechanic, came over to look at the issue and even he could not get it. We ended up resorting to plan D; the use of a torch. I heated up the snapping rollers and wouldn't you know it, they popped right off. That's how the corn head ended up catching on fire. It only took 7 hours total before the snapping rollers came off.

We finished the night off by putting the tires back on the red Volvo and changing the fuel filters, and water filters.
