After sitting for a week due to the rain, we finally got to turn some wheels. It has a rainy spring and it has proven to be a challenge getting the 2019 corn and soybean crops planted. We just get a good day of running in, and then the rain hits and we have to sit.
The video starts out with words from Daddy Cornstar... and some goats. I give a short recap on my college graduation ceremony, and then you really get to see Daddy Cornstar's obsession with Heinz ketchup in action.
Once we got back to the farm for the week, the first thing we had to do was go to one of our rented farms and talk to an excavator operator about where we wanted trees that he was going to tear down. We drove around in the field for a little bit and discussed putting field tile in different locations as well. Once we got done doing that, we decided to go touch up a few cemeteries along the way. We had one grave that settled and were able to borrow our neighbors John Deere skid-loader to get it touched up. I give a little bit of reasoning behind why we have to touch up graves as well. Our priority for the day was to get the White 6180 planter planting and the Hagie STS10 sprayer spraying.
We checked a plethora of fields and most were too wet, but there were a couple that were dry enough. We ate lunch quickly and then got the planter ready to go, and checked out the sprayer as well. I filled the freshwater rinse tank on the sprayer and explained what we use that for. Dad then went off to plant corn while I started spraying 32% nitrogen.
I give a little bit of information about the first farm I am spraying in and talk about the rate of nitrogen I am putting down. I can do 29.8 acre batches at a rate of 33.5 gallons an acre. I start spraying and then have a little fun with the auto-steer. I ended up running out of 32% so I had to run the semi to the main farm and fill up with 5,000 gallons of 32% nitrogen.
I got the farm around the house done, drove the sprayer down the road to another farm, got a ride back to the semi, brought the semi over to that farm, and then started spraying there. I sprayed until it was dark and then headed home. In the mean time, Dad had a minor messy breakdown with the air fans on the planter so him and Cooper fixed that.
It rained the next two days. While it was raining I focuses on cleaning the inside of the farm house, which I moved into. The sun finally started shining again, so we decided to move some more corn. Ronnie, our trucker has been hauling a lot of corn lately so the hopper bottom was getting fairly low. We had some water to suck out of different pits with the sump pump and then got to transferring corn. While I was transferring corn, Ronnie showed up for a load of corn, so I had to switch some wires around. While Ronnie was filling, I accidentally over-filled the semi on the grain pits. I cleaned that up easily. Then I went to fill the sprayer tanks with 32% nitrogen so they would be ready in the morning and I almost over-filled the first tank. While I was filling the second tank, I over-filled the auger coming out of the wagon that is used to transfer corn. After I cleaned that up, I ran back over to the 32% tanks and was just about to shut that off, when it too, over-filled. It was quite the day of events.
Thank you for watching.
